DoT working on stricter rules for tampering of IMEI number, tracking lost mobiles

The Department of Telecom is taking a shot at guidelines to make altering of IMEI number, which is a special 15-digit serial number, of cell phones a culpable offense with up to three years of detainment. The move will help check issues relating to fake IMEI numbers and furthermore ease following of lost cell phones. 

"It is hard to track cell phones as a result of copy IMEI numbers. The DoT is taking a shot at guidelines to make altering of IMEI numbers a culpable offense under Indian Telegraph Act," an administration official said. The International Mobile Equipment Identity Number (IMEI) helps security organizations in following cell phones and also calls produced using them. 

The DoT has banned telecom administrators from giving support of any cell phone with fake IMEI number yet the administrators confront issue in recognizing handsets with copy IMEI number. In one of the following instance of cell phone, the Telecom Enforcement Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cell of the DoT found there were around 18,000 handsets were utilizing same IMEI number. 

The proposed rules are being cultivated in mix of area 7 and segment 25 of the Indian Telegraph Act. The area 7 gives DoT energy to make rules for lead of telecom or transmit administrations and segment 25 manages harming of broadcast line, machines and related hardware. "The standards will be advised in official paper once concluded," the officer said.
