National ranking tennis: Upsets mark first round as trainees net wins in women’s, men’s singles

CLTA TRAINEE and qualifier Ashpreet Kaur Bajwa made an angry with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 prevail upon seventh seed Adrija Biswas in the first round of the ladies' singles class in the primary draw of the AITA-CLTA National Ranking Tennis Championship being played at the CLTA Tennis Courts on Monday. 

Bajwa, who vanquished Jannat Kaur in the qualifier to achieve the primary draw, began the match on an assaulting note and stashed the opening set 6-3. Around a set, Biswas regrouped to win the second 6-3. The third set saw Bajwa not giving any chance to Biswas and snatched the third and last set effortlessly by 6-1 to cruise into the pre-quarters. 

In another match in a similar class, CLTA student Prinkle Singh finished the test of Nikita Bishnoi with an effortless 6-4, 6-1 win. Playing controlled shots, Prinkle won the opening set 6-4 preceding trouncing Bishnoi 6-1 in the second and last set to enter the pre-quarters. 

It was delight for Smriti Singh as she rose champ in an intense match against Neha Ghare with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win. Singh began the procedures effortlessly, winning the opening set 6-2 however Ghare made a solid rebound, winning the second 7-5. The third set, as well, saw both players putting forth a valiant effort and it was Singh, who won 7-5 to cruise into the pre-quarters. 

In the men's singles, CLTA student Sultan Singh Atwal proceeded with his fine frame with a furious prevail upon 6th seed Sunil Malik with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 triumph. Atwal, who had crushed Uttarkarsh Bhardwaj in the qualifying round, took the opening set 6-2 preceding Malik won 7-5 in the second set to draw level. Atwal at that point won the last set 6-1 effortlessly to enter the second round. 

In the opening match of the day, beat seed Hardeep Singh Sandhu legitimized his positioning with a straight set 6-4, 6-3 prevail upon Digvijay Singh Mehta. In another match in the men's singles, qualifier Udayan Bhakar beaten Himanshu Mor with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. The singles' principle draw second round and pairs' pre-quarterfinals will be played from 8.30 am onwards on Tuesday.
